Monday Links and News – 03.31.2014

by Daniel J. Hogan

Ah, the joys of sending out email newsletters. By which I mean learning how not to trigger TinyLetter’s spam warning system. Both of my newsletters have done so, forcing me to research how to avoid this with future newsletters. Thankfully, TinyLetter and its parent Mail Chimp offer advice. It could be something as simple as my using different font sizes for the different sections which trigger the spam warnings.

So, I’ll stop using Headings and do a few other things differently.

Still, despite the setback, I’m gaining subscribers. I already have more newsletter subscribers than folks subscribed to Feedburner’s get an email when a new post is published service.

Going over my taxes this month forced me to evaluate what I spent on advertising Clattertron in 2013, and if said cost was ‘worth it.’ I decided to cut my monthly budget in half for now, and experiment with different ad campaigns. It is very easy to spend, spend, spend, when it comes to online advertising and rack up hundreds of dollars in bills in no time. This is why I stick to a budget–and why I explore other options, like the newsletter.
