Behold! My finished piece for the 2020 Mitten Project (see my previous blog post). I dropped off my completed creation at the Cedar Street Art Collective on Tuesday evening. I’m looking forward to this Sunday’s opening and silent auction.

Silent Auction Details

The official unveiling of all of the pieces is this Sunday, Feb. 9, inside Cedar Street Art Collective (1701 S Cedar St, Lansing, MI 48910). The fun begins at noon, and lasts until 5PM. I plan on being there as part of the artist meet and greet, noon – 2PM. (I’m not selling stuff, FYI, just hanging out and talking about my piece)

The silent auction lasts until the end of February, and proceeds from the art sales go towards benefiting art programs in Lansing schools. Hooray!

About My Mitten Project Artwork

Firstly, each artist received a wooden cutout of Michigan’s peninsulas. After that, I had the go ahead to do whatever I wanted. I decided to do shape drawings, like my Found Cartoons series.

Color shapes on a Michigan cutout using Posca paint pens

First, I started with a random shape I made with Uni Posca Paint Pens. The pens are acrylic paint, which is different from my usual watercolor, but I enjoyed the challenge. Next, I used a black Posca pen to turn the shapes into “creatures.”

Finally, after the paint dried and I added my details, I sealed the piece with some spray varnish. I’m happy with how my Mitten Project piect turned out. It is whimsical and colorful, which I intended from the start. Working with new materials like wood and the Posca pens was a good creative challenge, too.

See You Sunday!

I highly recommend attending Sunday’s event at Cedar Street Art Collective. There are many more pieces to see besides mine, and each is unique and fun. Some haven’t been revealed on social media yet either.

There is another fundraiser for the Mitten Project on Sunday, Feb. 16 at The Green Door in Lansing. It sounds like the pieces will be brought to this event for the day, so there is another chance to check them out and bid. To sum up, this is for a great cause, and I’m happy to help support art in Lansing schools.
