Monster Portraits is a watercolor cartoon series I came up with in 2018. This series was part of my submission to the Emerging Artist program for the East Lansing Art Festival. Much to my excitement, I got into the ELAF and continued working on this series.
My goal with Monster Portraits was to create colorful and funny looking monsters, with each of them smiling and looking (or acting) happy. You can see a lot of in progress and finished photos on my Instagram. Sizes include 5×7, 8×10, and 11×14, all done with a combination of ink and watercolor paint, on watercolor paper. I exhibited the entire finished collection (nearly 30 pieces) at the 2018 East Lansing Art Festival in the Emerging Artists tent.
I kept a look out for interesting frames and thankfully I found a bunch. I feel the frames I chose compliment the funny drawings, giving them a fancy “portrait” look.
