Video: Watch Me Paint a Watercolor Cartoon

I know y’all love watchin’ me paint (…right?). Here’s a video I shot on Facebook Live recently (hence the vertical video). It’s me painting a watercolor cartoon in my Monster Portraits series, which I’m exhibiting at the East Lansing Art Festival next month (gulp).

I stripped out the audio, because I wasn’t really talking, and when it I did, it was just a quick thing to someone in the comments on Facebook. Maybe next time I will try to chat more. I never know if viewers care about such a thing or not (they do seem to like it on Facebook Live, though).

Like those lovable Pokémon, my Monster Portraits series evolved over the past several weeks. I started working on larger watercolor cartoons. I only ever did 4×6 and 5×7 in the past. Now I’m working on cartoons sized 11×14. I’m glad I pushed myself to work larger. It makes some aspects of painting and cartooning easier…while others are a bit more challenging.

It’s all good though. Now I have a growing collection of large watercolor pieces, and a good selection of 5×7 cartoons too. They range from headshots to full bodies. I’m happy with what I’m cranked out so far, and I’m going to keep going. I don’t necessarily plan on taking everything with me to the East Lansing Art Festival. I figure, I would rather take my top 10-15 out of 30 finished pieces than have to take everything because I only did ten (or fewer).

Don’t Forget: I have two events this month. I’ll be at the REO Town Marketplace Pop Up on Saturday, April 21 and at the Clinton Macomb Public Library Comic Con on Saturday, April 28. Come say hi! Both are free to attend.
