The Sunrises & Smokestacks exhibition at Fenner Nature Center is open now! It runs until January 5th, and you can see my piece, Reclamation. The theme of the art exhibition is, according to Fenner:
Sunrises & smokestacks: Deconstructing the divide between urban & wild spaces.” As a nature center situated within Lansing’s city limits, we recognize and appreciate the juxtaposition of these spaces traditionally thought of as separate. For this exhibition, artists are invited to question, explore and challenge the notion that metropolitan and natural elements cannot or do not overlap.
This was my first time using some new Holbein watercolors, specifically Payne’s Grey and Davy’s Grey (which I quickly grew to love).
Look below for a shot of my artist statement hanging on the wall nearby. You can see my comic making influence in this piece, with its “three panels” which tell a story. The idea I had was to show an urban building in the first panel. Then, I wanted to show the building being overtaken by nature with the passage of time.
A heads up though: my piece already sold!
Yes, I’m happy to say Reclamation sold at the opening reception on December 6th. Don’t worry though, the piece is on display until the show ends in January. Go check out the exhibition while you can, as there are a lot of great pieces (including some by my wife, Steph Joy Hogan).
I’m all done with events for 2019! My calendar for 2020 is already starting fill up. My first event of the year is in February.
