Friday brings my next event, ScrapFest 13! This is only my second time appearing and I can’t wait to be back. I had a lot of fun at my first ScrapFest last year and there’s a reason it was one of the few shows I decided to do this season. (I scaled back on shows this year)
What is ScrapFest?
There is a lot at ScrapFest, including a sculpture contest requiring the use of, you guessed it, scrap metal. Plus, a “refashion” show using old clothing. However, when it comes to vendors like me, there’s a requirement to use “repurposed materials” in some way.
Last year I came up with my ScrapToons. I take pages from a 1966 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica and draw on top. A fan gave Steph and I a full set of many volumes at our studio, so I decided to put them to use.
How I Make ScrapToons
Of course, there’s a bit more work than just “drawing on top” of the old pages for ScrapFest. Because the paper is so thin, I have apply a coat of clear gesso first. This primes the page and adds a toothy surface for the paint and ink to stay. It also prevents the paint from soaking through the paper.
I mainly use Posca Markers, which are acrylic paint markers. In some cases I also use Holbein Acryla Gouache as well (when it dries, it stays dried and doesn’t reactivate with water).
After the paint is dried, I go back and add details with ink pens, usually a Zebra or a Micron for really small details.
The final step is putting the finished piece in a mat and/or a frame. At first I would cut the page down prior to adding the paint and matting. I’ve changed this and now cut the page down when I’m matting, as it gives me a little more room to work with.
When and Where is ScrapFest?
This year’s ScrapFest is Friday, July 14th, 5 PM – 9 PM and Saturday July 15th, 11 AM – 7 PM in Lansing’s Old Town. I’ll be right on Turner Road, near Bad Annie’s and UrbanBeat. Everything is outside and on Turner, and there’s no cost to attend.
I can’t wait to see you and show off all of my new ScrapToons! FYI, I will only have ScrapToons with me this weekend, no prints or any other art.
Also: I’m selling all matted and framed ScrapToons for special ScrapFest only prices this weekend. All matted ScrapToons, regardless of size, will be $40 each (normally $50 or more). Framed pieces will vary, because of the different frame sizes, but they will also be discounted.
These prices are only good this Friday and Saturday, and only in person at ScrapFest.
