The time off was nice while it lasted. Anyway, time to get back in the saddle. This Friday and Saturday brings ScrapFest 12 to Lansing’s Old Town, and I’m appearing for the first time.
What is ScrapFest?
This weekend’s art festival is a bit different. Artists can only sell art which makes use of “repurposed” or “recycled” materials. What this means is, I cannot sell my usual art, as it is all made with new materials (for example, everything I brought to the East Lansing Art Festival).
So, what did I do?
I decided to make cartoon art using pages from a 1966 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, which I call ScrapToons. Steph and I were given this set in the past year, and it’s just been sitting in our studio. That was until I started ripping pages out and drawing on them a few weeks ago to prepare for ScrapFest.
Granted, it is a bit more involved than just “ripping out pages on drawing on them.” I find an interesting page, ideally one with a photo or other art. Next I cut the page to size (4×6 or 5×7), and then slap some clear gesso on the paper. This gesso not only primes the paper, but gives me a surface to work on, and adds a bit of “tooth” (texture to help the paint stick). It also helps stop the paint and ink from soaking through the thin paper.
Where
ScrapFest 12 is held in Old Town, Lansing on Turner St. (Extending from E César E. Chávez Ave. to Beaver St.)
When
Friday, July 8, 5PM – 9PM (note: Arts Night Out is happening at the same time)
Saturday, July 9, 11AM – 7PM
There’s no cost to attend, and everything is outside. I’m in booth 4, near the begining by the traffic light at Turner (looks like I will be close to Bad Annie’s Sweary Goods).
Here are a couple examples of my ScrapToons. Most were made with Posca Paint Markers and ink. I made 39 pieces total, all using old paper and in some cases old mats and frames. I’ve already sold three pieces, so I will actually have 36 for sale this weekend.
Now the big news:
For this weekend only at ScrapFest:
All matted ScrapToons (regardless of size): $30
All framed ScrapToons (regardless of size): $50
Again, these prices are for in person at ScrapFest this weekend only. After ScrapFest, the prices will increase to my normal range for art that size.
Come and grab a unique piece of cartoon art while you can this weekend.
