Photo – Gull-Tor, Seagull King of Alcatraz

by Daniel J. Hogan
"In the land of no-legged Seagulls, the one-legged Seagull is KING! And that's ME, baby! ...What do you mean you all have two legs?"

Gull-Tor wears the jewled crown of Alcatraz upon a troubled brow.

Today starts a theme week on the ol’ Lovable Geek Photoblog. The theme? Alcatraz! I visited the famous prison back in April and took plenty of photos. You can see a few in my Flickr set, Escape to Alcatraz (and I’ll be posting this week’s photos there later).

More photos and rambling nonsense after the break.

OK, the first thing you gotta know about the Rock–the Seagulls RUN THE SHOW. Seriously. They are everywhere. It is like The Birds with real birds (…wait, those were real birds…).

Secondly, the Rock is a great place for photos. Stuff is crumbling apart, and nature has reclaimed a great portion of the island. If you ever get to San Francisco, do yourself a favor and block out a few hours to snap some photos at Alcatraz.

I love the decay and texture of the pipe thing the Seagull is standing on–and I love all of the blurry Seagulls in the background.

"When you said this place was a fixer-upper, you weren't kiddin', Ralph."

A pair of Gull-Tor's subjects.

When you walk around the yard, you’ll see random piles of walls and such.  It is great.

Window

An old favorite, from my Flickr set. This took a lot of Photoshop work to get the colors how I wanted, and to bring out the land in the background of the window frame.

Tomorrow: More of Alcatraz!
