A black and white photo I snapped at the recent Wine and Stein at Potter Park Zoo, right here in good ol’ Lansing, Michigan.

This is one of the zoo’s Eurasian Eagle Owls–which is a lovely bird. This shot was taken in very low light outside (the Wine and Stein event was a fund raiser for the zoo). One of the zookeepers was wrangling this guy, and I loved the detail on the leather glove and the owl’s talons.
I converted this to black and white in Photoshop, and used the Film Grain filter to add a bit more character (and to bring out some more detail). The front most owl foot is a bit more exposed then I would have liked, but otherwise I am happy with this.
I find owls, and other birds of prey, very interesting. Owls are probably my favorite, however.

Love the talons, and how you decided to compose the photo. Nice, and slightly spooky! (At least in terms of this thing grabbing me.)
Thanks 🙂 I’m working on paying attention to how I am composing shots lately. Trying to get away from “tourist shooting,” where I just snap away at everything. I’m getting there.
