I ran in the Capital City River Run 5k myself (there was also a half-marathon). I did it in 24:01, a new best for me–my previous was 25:20. I came in 10th in my age group (out of 33 guys), and 75th overall out of about 900 5k runners (give or take). Not bad, I’ll take it.
I went back to my apartment for my camera after the race–I didn’t run with it, smarty-pants.
I have been focusing on training lately and it certainly paid off. I’m working on building up my endurance and it is helping considerably. I did not feel like I was going to die after Sunday’s race.
My previous strategy was: run for five minutes and then alternate running and power-walking for the race. Now, I’m just running the whole thing. My pace may peak and dip, but I’m not slowing to the point of powerwalking, hence shaving over a minute off my previous best time.
I have also been running for four miles on my training runs, instead of the 3.1 of a 5k. I figure, if I get used to running four miles, then 3.1 should not be a problem.
This Sunday is the Dino Dash 5k at Michigan State University. I’m ready to step on that 5k’s throat. Bring it.
