Here’s some big, big news: today kicks off my brand new solo exhibition at Nelson Gallery: Hidden Pictures. I posted a quick walk-through of the exhibition over on TikTok, so check that out!
Nelson Gallery: Debuting My New Found Cartoons
That’s right: I have over 20 brand new Found Cartoons pieces on display at Nelson Gallery in downtown Lansing, Michigan (113 S. Washington Square, Lansing, MI 48933).
This time around, I mainly worked on bigger pieces and on canvas. I really enjoyed this new direction, but I still made a few of my usual watercolor Found Cartoons. I also used Posca MOP’R paints for the first time. These larger Posca paints allowed me to work on bigger canvases with ease. It got a bit messy at times but I just worked that into the final pieces.
What Are Found Cartoons?
For those unfamiliar, my Found Cartoons start as a paint shape. I aim for a random or odd shape. Then, I turn that shape into a cartoon. In the past I did this with watercolor paint and ink pens. However, as I wrote above I used Posca paint for the larger pieces. I also used some fluid acrylics and acrylic inks for making some shapes as well.
You can watch a few before and after slideshows on my TikTok. You can see what the shapes looked like before I turned them into cartoons.
The opening reception for the show is Friday, June 14th at 5:30 PM. If you can’t make the reception, don’t worry–the exhibition runs until July 26th at Nelson Gallery.
Because I’m not selling at any art festivals this summer, the exhibition at Nelson Gallery is the next best thing for me. Or perhaps even better, because I won’t be out side dealing with the weather, and I didn’t have to set up at tent.
