Diary Comics on Patreon

I decided to start sharing the diary comics I’m making. These are part of Lynda Barry’s Making Comics, which is an excellent book by the way.

Unlike my other comics, these diary comics will be for patrons only on Patreon. It also doesn’t matter what level of patron either, $1+ gets access.

These aren’t fully rendered, polished comics though. They are quick and rough, done in only five minutes (the time limit is part of the assignment). Plus, they won’t always be “jokey” although I’m sure often than not they will be.

To find these new comics, and other patrons only posts, just use the patrons only tag here. I posted the first one yesterday.

For some extra context, the full assignment has several parts. I make a list of seven different things I did and saw for the day (or within the past 24 hours or so). I also write down something I overheard and write a question on my mind. Then, I go over all these and pick one to make into a one panel comic.

The comic itself is also two parts. There is the comic, but also a writing exercise with it. I write about the scene in the first person for five minutes (or until I fill the space). Then, I draw the scene above the writing space (all of these is done in a basic composition notebook, per Barry’s requirements). I draw the comic fast, and keep things simple: I only have five minutes, and I do it all with a Flair pen.

Barry suggests alternating between doing the writing or the drawing first, which I try to do.

So, after reading the steps involved you can imagine the final product is a bit chaotic, but that’s the point. Make something fast so you don’t overthink it, don’t treat it as precious, and just get it done. It’s really about building habits and getting comfortable drawing.

Anyway, here’s the first one! Other comics will still become public after a day or so.
