Monday Links and News – 10.14.2013

by Daniel J. Hogan

As I posted a few days ago, I installed a new theme and tweaked a few other parts of the site. I’m not 100% done yet, but I will be soon (or at least ‘done enough’). It never hurts to shake things up design-wise every so often (or in this case, every  two-three years).

I performed a seven minute set of stand-up comedy at The Firm in downtown Lansing on Friday night. There was a great turnout and a great selection of comics, both local and from out of town. I only used a little bit of my set from last Sunday’s Church of Comedy, and I felt the majority of it went over well.

My method for writing my stand-up bits is similar to writing a blog post, really. I write about 100 words per minute I will be on stage (usually a little under, but it is close), and I mainly just write stories or scenes. For example, my stand-up routine for Friday was just under 700 words, broken up between a few different bits. Each bit had its own theme or focus. Then, I typed up a page with each section’s main theme and bullet points of jokes or lines, in case I forget.

I don’t know when I will get to perform stand-up again, but I am having fun so far. Three sets, and two in the past week.

Speaking of performing, on Oct. 17th (this Thursday) I’m emceeing the Michigan Library Association Ignite Event here in Lansing (downtown at the Lansing Center). I should treat that as a stand-up bit and write up some jokes–library jokes though. Hmm. Moby Dick is a great source for jokes, I’m sure.
