And now for something completely different. A bit of a photo comic. Inspiration is an odd mistress. This stars a pair of penguins at Lansing’s Potter Park Zoo. Warning: this is a bit silly.

How and why, I did this, after the break.

When I was reviewing the photos from this day at the Zoo, I knew I had to do something with these shots. Yelling Penguin’s expression was too priceless not to use.

Originally, I was just going to pick my favorite pose, but after seeing the series, I decided I wanted to take a stab at a photo comic. My one regret is the font I used, mainly because of its lack of a ” ‘ ” in Don’t. Oh well. Live and learn.

I threw this together in Photoshop, starting with a document the width I wanted (600 px). After that, I just tried to figure out the best way to arrange the shots. I’m pretty happy with the end result, although it is nothing spectacular.

But, I had fun and that’s the most important part. And it was a good Photoshop exercise. I want to do more of these.

May 1, as the first Saturday in the month, is the 8th annual Free Comic Book Day. I feel my geek cred requires me to make a public service announcement (with guitar).

The idea behind FCBD is to lure folks into indie comic book shops with free stuff and cool events. One such local shop is Clem’s Collectibles in downtown Lansing. They are having artists and other neat things to celebrate FCBD, details here.

There are other great comic shops in Lansing: Capital City Collectibles and 21st Century Comics, to name a few. The reason I’m showcasing Clem’s a bit is because that’s where my “pull list” is and I’ve been buying comics from there on a semi-regular basis since moving to Lansing five years ago.

I have two titles on my pull list at Clem’s right now, Jeff Smith’s Rasl and Millar & NcNiven’s Nemesis–which I read the first issue of today. All I can say is, wow. Great book (suggested for mature readers though).

So if you are a comic book fan or want a low-risk way to see what all the fuss is about, find a store near you that is taking part in Free Comic Book Day* and have some fun on Saturday.

* not every store takes part in this event, and the shops that do actually pay for the “free” comics.

Hooray, another (horrible) comic I drew on my Nintendo DSi in Flipnote Studio. This was inspired by a phrase created with a Magnetic Poetry set I received for Christmas, which was “I am a nefarious spaceman with Kafkaesque cunning.” ( I also used it to make this bit of epic fridge poetry last night) Sadly, I cannot take credit for the creation of the phrase, but I did draw the silly comic below.

The last two panels were more-or-less the same conversation I had with the phrase in question’s creator. I finally made use of Flipnote’s “onion skin” feature and when drawing the last two panels–namely when drawing the lady, and it shows (I’m not great at drawing the same thing twice on my own, case in point–look at how my characters change in each panel).

And whenever I think of Kafka, I think of this great episode (and song) from the cartoon, Home Movies.

I was thinking aloud on Twitter yesterday about a spoof of Dune called Drift, which would take place on a snow/ice planet instead of a desert planet (the name coming from snowdrift). Well, inspiration struck and I drew the (terrible) comic below on my Nintendo DS. Like before, this was pieced together in Photoshop. For the record, I am a fan of the novels, films, etc.

Read at own risk, this could get stupid.

This was fun, I enjoyed coming up with a way to spoof some of Dune‘s characters and such. And yes, I know it isn’t Paul who eventually becomes God Emperor. Hooray for stupid comics. When doing these, I try not to edit (too much) and to just go with my first idea. If anything, these are a good ‘think on my feet’ exercise. Man, I can’t even begin to tell you how many I hours of my youth I wasted spent playing Dune II on our old PC.

Oh man, this was pretty bad. But, I was inspired. Had to run with it. I pieced everything together in Photoshop (and added the date/URL).

I also added the dino saying “burp” because I realized after the fact that it may not be apparent that he ATE them–did not want a reader to think something else had transpired.

This was fun. I’ll try and do more. You can probably guess I drew this in like ten minutes, it certainly shows. I enjoy doing stupid comics like this, it is fun to draw something silly once in a while.
