Saturday is Free Comic Book Day

May 1, as the first Saturday in the month, is the 8th annual Free Comic Book Day. I feel my geek cred requires me to make a public service announcement (with guitar).

The idea behind FCBD is to lure folks into indie comic book shops with free stuff and cool events. One such local shop is Clem’s Collectibles in downtown Lansing. They are having artists and other neat things to celebrate FCBD, details here.

There are other great comic shops in Lansing: Capital City Collectibles and 21st Century Comics, to name a few. The reason I’m showcasing Clem’s a bit is because that’s where my “pull list” is and I’ve been buying comics from there on a semi-regular basis since moving to Lansing five years ago.

I have two titles on my pull list at Clem’s right now, Jeff Smith’s Rasl and Millar & NcNiven’s Nemesis–which I read the first issue of today. All I can say is, wow. Great book (suggested for mature readers though).

So if you are a comic book fan or want a low-risk way to see what all the fuss is about, find a store near you that is taking part in Free Comic Book Day* and have some fun on Saturday.

* not every store takes part in this event, and the shops that do actually pay for the “free” comics.
