Imagine the Avenue: Arts Night Out This Friday

My busy August continues this Friday evening with Imagine the Avenue: Arts Night Out. What’s even better is, my wife¹ Steph Joy Hogan will be at the same event.

Awww.

So come on out this Friday at 5 PM for a double shot of Hogan art. We’ll be selling art until 8 PM.

What is Arts Night Out?

If “Arts Night Out” sounds familiar, it’s because I did one in May 2017 in Old Town, Lansing. The idea of the event is to get art in places (usually local businesses) where people may not normally see it.

From the Arts Night Out website:

“Presented by the Arts Council of Greater Lansing, Arts Night Out was launched in May 2016 and is a bi-monthly event to expand and experience urban space and creativity in unexpected ways.”

Case in point, last May Steph and I set-up shop in the Piper & Gold Public Relations offices and sold art. This time around, we’ll be in a vacant shop space in The Venue on Michigan Ave (on the 2000 block, right next to Strange Matter Coffee Co. and across the street from The Green Door).

To sum up: Arts Night Out gets local artists into local fun spots to sell (or at least showcase) their art. It’s a fun, great program which Steph and I enjoy even when we aren’t exhibiting our own work.

What is Imagine the Avenue?

Bear with me as I dive into some local Lansing inside baseball/other metaphors. Michigan Avenue is a main road in and out of downtown Lansing, and folks in the city want to give it an overhaul. Specifically, they want to give it a “road diet,” and take it from busy road to slower-paced, walkable/bikeable main street of sorts.

From the event posting:

“For one week, along one block of Michigan Avenue, we invite you to imagine how a “new” Michigan Avenue could look and function. Walkable, bikeable, shoppable … fantastic. Special activities are planned during the week. Come experience Imagine the Avenue and shape the avenue with us!”

This is why Arts NIght Out is on the Eastside of town this month, instead of it’s usually stomping grounds of Old Town. I’m all for a more walkable/bikeable Lansing, so I like this idea of shaking things up on Michigan Ave.

What Art Am I Selling?

A bit of everything! I’ll have prints, buttons, and original art for sale this Friday. Originals will include my (recently finished) 100 Days Project cartoons and my Monster Portraits series, including some of the big pieces I haven’t displayed since the East Lansing Art Festival.

Please come join the fun this Friday night at 5 PM!

And don’t forget: Steph and I are both appearing at Artfeast on August 18 in Old Town!
